The History of Silverhawks Action Figures

The SilverHawks action figures are based on the animated cartoon series and comic book series of the same name. These action figures hit the market in 1987 after the TV series had already been completed. The figures were released by the Kenner toy company that has also been responsible for many other much-loved action figures.

SilverHawks is in many ways similar to a previous animated show called Thundercats; they were actually created by the same company with Thundercats proving the more successful. SilverHawks is also based in space and is often said to have a similar feel to Thundercats; the shows even share many of the same voice actors. In total there were 65 episodes.

When the SilverHawks action figures were released they each came with a companion bird. This mirrors the show as birds are an important part of the story line. The leader of the group is Jonathan Quick or Quicksilver and he has his metal bird called TellyHawk always by his side. The different members of the SilverHawks are half flesh and half metal. It is their task to travel to the Limbo galaxy where they go into battle against the MonStar.

Many of the SilverHawks action figure collection are now much sought after. In particular the ultrasonic Quicksilver is a very rare collectable; this was released during the second wave of action figures. Frustratingly for fans, there were also SilverHawks vehicles, base stations, and other accessories shown in the Kenner toy catalogue in 1988 but these were never released. There were a few criticism raised about this toy because it seemed to be particularly susceptible to wear and tear due to the fact it was made from plastic chrome; the paint could easily chip off.

The SilverHawks action figures never really managed to capture the imagination of children in the same way as other similar toys of the same genre had done before that time. They were just too similar to other things that had gone before; they didn’t really break any new ground. They have been complimented on the amount of detail there is in the figures themselves, but not really enough to make them stand out.
